Rajinikanth was born into a Marathi family in Bangalore. His father, Ramoji Rao Gaekwad, was a police constable, and his mother, Jijabai, was a homemaker. After losing his mother at an early age, he faced financial hardships and worked as a coolie and a bus conductor before pursuing acting.
In 1973, he joined the Madras Film Institute to study acting. His talent was recognized by legendary Tamil director K. Balachander, who gave him his first major role in Apoorva Raagangal (1975), where he played a supporting character.
